Has anyone replaced their stock ignition coil with the Pertronix electronic ignition Coil?
Is this thing any good?

I went with a MSD Coil in my 83 320i, approximently 10 Kv more spark over stock coil.
improved mileage and I think gave it a little boost in performance.

Hello shield
I have installed the Pertronix systems on Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Porsche, Fiat, VW and BMW.
The system and parts have worked well.

The question is; why are you installing it?
It will give a hotter spark, if the spark plugs, wires, rotor and cap are good, if they are marginal or bad, it will finish off the sub standard parts in record time.

If you are looking for more power and better performance:
#1. Full tune-up = new spark plugs, wires, rotor and cap.
#2. Clean the throttle body and plate.
#3. Replace the intake manifold injector seal rings.
#4. Check injector spray pattern.
#5. Replace the OEM air filter every 3000 miles, regardless of how it looks.
#6. Check for vacuum leaks and repair or replace as needed.
#7. Check for brake caliper drag, rebuild or replace as needed.
#8. Check all wheel bearings for slop or rough spots in rotation, and adjust or replace as needed
#9. Check tires for shifted belts, uneven wear, bent rims and correct air pressure, further diagnosis may be needed.
#10. Check engine and transmission mounts for cracking, oil saturation = marshmallow feel or total separation, replace as needed.
#11. Do a compression test and cylinder leak down test, post the results.
#12. Check fuel pump pressure.
#13. Use only synthetic oil in the engine.

I will stop here; the list of things that can have an effect on performance is huge

Do yourself a favor.

#2. Clean the throttle body and plate. = a can of throttle body cleaner and brush.
#6. Check for vacuum leaks and repair or replace as needed. = a water spray bottle to spray intake and hoses, listen for any change of RPM, do small areas.

These two are critical for any BMW and cheap.

i have heard HORRIBLE things about using water from numerous BMW and other German car mechanics...my advice is use chlorine free brake cleaner and the car will idle up...but avoid sprayin on painted surfaces :P

I just cleaned the Throttle body/plate, and the PCV hose. What a mess. It was filthy in there and I couldn't believe the buildup in the PCV hose.
Got a bottle of injector cleaner, used up a lot of clean rags and sacrificed my fiance's toothbrush (got her a new one before she kicked my ass).
I'll get some brake cleaner and do the vacuum leak test tomorrow.
Maybe it's the placebo effect, but I think she idles smoother already .
