i just picked up a used O2 sensor to last me till i can get a new one

is there any way to clean it?
or can i sand the surface with out screwing it up?

You wasted your money, buying a used O2 sensor is like buying used brake pads. Unless you lost your old one some how. Don't for get to put Anti-sieze on it, you'll have a "fun" time getting it out when you try to change it again.
