any place i go they only have oil filters for 325s is the filter for a 91' 318 the same as the 325? If not what oil filter should i use?

I'd look it up on an auto parts website. If it's different, you can pick one up and take that to a shop.

The M42 oil filter (late 318) is not the same as the M20.

well, what I do is buy the Fram PH2870 for my 1988 325i...and have been for 100,000K miles along with Castrol 10/40 (winter) or 20/50 (summer) and the damn car runs great...I don't even check the oil between changes, I really don't...the damn thing doesn't leak a drop and the filter is fine.....screw the Mann and Purelator (whatever) filters...Fram works just fine...PH2870 is emblazoned in my mind...and Castrol is the goods....that's my way.... I now have 180,000K miles on the old 325iC engine and she runs like a top...it is almost scary...I keep waiting for something to go wrong...but she won't break...rats.......
