Obd for 1985 318i

Hi boys and girls. I'm a new member but have landed on these forums searching answers online. Really an informative bunch of BMW fans here! My super nice 318i starts and immediately quits. I have no diagnostics for this era and it has a 15 pin connector by the front top engine area. Does the 20 pin units i see online hook up to this? I can't seem to find a 15 anywhere. Thanks

Welcome to Bimmerwerkz.

Pre-1995 is OBDI. To access the OBD system and any stored codes you will need to perform the "stomp test". Plently of info on how to do it on Google, but its basiclly pressing the gas pedal all the way to the floor 5 times, in less then 5 seconds. Then the codes will flash on the dash in a Morse code sort of way. All are 4 digits.

Yes i know it's obd1. I have diagnostic tools for obd2. In order for the stomp test to work, there needs to be a light in the cluster to flash. From what i've read, one would have to be soldered in. I won't risk the damage. Car has 29k original miles and the plastics are fragile. Hence my original question about the obd1 connector. I have not come across a 15 pin obd connector.
