Talking new menber, please help. 87' 325i electrical

Hellow everyone. Thank you in advance for checking this post and attempting to assist a fellow inthusiast. I have searched the different post on the site and still have a couple questions. I'm wanting to reset the SI lights. The car in question is a 87' 325i. The car does have a 20 pin connector and upon looking for the #7 Pin which has a green wire. The #19 Pin hole is empty. However, the #20 pin has the Brown (Ground) wire in place. So, I followed the procedure to jump #7 and instead of going to the empty #19 Pin hole I went to the #20 Pin (ground). I turned the ignition to ON and commenced to wait the 10 or so sec. for the inspection light to clear and the wire I used to jump the two Pins cought fire. Thankfully it didn't cause to much damage. (melted part of the plastic housing). Any ideas as to what went wrong and how to proceed properly to reset the SI Lights would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Docho

Just buy yourself a reset tool from Ebay, they are really cheap and eliminate the risk of shorting the ECU ( computer ), one like this:

1986-2001 BMW Oil Inspection Service 20 Pin Reset Tool on eBay (end time 09-Oct-09 18:39:38 BST)

I stepped in a plate of Pasta the other day - now I have to worry about my Carbonara footprint!

I believe you answered your own question....you didn't follow the instructions
because they didn't line up to what you thought. You were right in the first
place....it is 7 and 19....true...I don't know what 20 is but apparently it's not
ground......

what you have to do is look further down into the plug to see the type of
wire you will need to jumper the thing...regardless...I wouldn't try this again
by myself if I were you....good luck
