My friend just bought a 1985 bmw 325e, I was wondering what is in the canister that has ZF marked on the top, to me it is power steering fluid but he said it didn't have it.we changed the oil topped up the coolant and brake fluid. The battery is dead right now b/c it won't start. He said it handles really well, pulls good.Doesnt miss at high speeds just is really quiet and runs well. The power windows not work so were trying to figure out if the motor is bad or the fuse is gone, can anyone give us a fuse box diagram and tell us what is in the fluid canister with zf on it.besides that everything looks good. It's been sitting for 2 years and just drievn 16 hours after sittin for so long.So if anyone can give us a hand with everything it be greatly apperciated.
The canister marked ZF is the power stearing resv. Be careful when topping of the fluid in this because BMW uses 3 different types of fluid in their power stearing systems. I think your friends car takes regular ATF fluid. As far as the fuse and wireing question go, go and pick up a Haynes manuel should have all the info you need.
I have the exact same type (85 325e). Ive had some problems with the power windows before. At one point I just yanked the buttons out of the car and cleaned them with some WD40 and/or alcohol.
If that doesnt work try replacing fuses, I have yet to find a place that sells 7.5 amp fuses without being in a huge set and 7.5 seems to be the ones that burn out the most often. I replaced them with 5 amp, theyll burn out faster but its better to have them burn out with a 5 than mess stuff up with a 10.
I dont know much about the steering res but it shouldnt be a big problem to find the proper fluid. Also you mentioned it being quiet, mine can sound fairly loud at higher RPMs, I have a stock muffler but maybe a leak or two in the headers. I like the sound my 325e makes
