Need Power Steering rack advice

Hello everyone I need a new PS rack. I was curious... should I buy the part online myself and then take it to a mechanic to install? I have a feeling if I let a shop do it all, they will mark up the part price a lot... also does anyone know a ballpark estimate of what this will cost to install?? Happend to anyone else?

it will probably be a 3hr install, so around $200. the part itself should be in the 300-400 range.

I doubt a mechanic would accept your parts. You could buy the best parts in the world and unless u know the guy or something, they probably would not take the parts.

First of all the want to put a mark up on the parts to make money, and second if somethin went wrong with the part and it was the part u gave him, they would blame the mishap on the part rather then mechanic error. I would just take it to the shop and have them buy the part and repair it.

it's not that hard to do yourself, it's like 6 bolts and a couple hoses

If you have average mechanical skills, it is an easy install. I'd advise you to check the tie rods too. You have 2 inner tie rods that may come with a new or rebuilt rack and 2 outer tie rods that will have to be separated from the spindles. It is hard not to tear the rubber boot with the "pickle fork".
I found the hardest part was where the steering attached. Getting that bolt out is easy. Getting the sleeve to slide back on the new stud was harder.
I got a rebuilt one for about $150.00 with a $160.00 core charge. UPS'ing it back was a little hassle. Be sure to save the box the rack comes in for that.
