My 82 E21 has started making some wicked noise from the top front of the motor, it sounds like real bad valve chatter, or timing chain rubbing something. I removed the valve cover and everything seemed OK and the sound stopped after a few minutes, what could this be?
You say sound stopped after a few minutes. Do you mean permanently stopped? Did it stop after you removed and replaced the cam cover? How many miles on the engine?
If there was a foreign object in there, it could have been caught near the timing gear, or a rocker. If you didnt find anything, that doesn't mean it's gone. It may have settled out of sight.
I was thinking it may have been something in there. I am swapping the starter right now (unrelated issue) so I won't know for certain if it is gone for good until then. i'll post after I get it running tomorrow.
