Motor and tranny

I'm rebuild a motor and swapping from a automatic to a straight shift in my 1990 325i. Lookin to do performance upgrades to help it get better gas mileage. It'll be my daily driver. 130 miles round trip to work so it needs to get at least 23-25 to be worth it. Any mileage over 20 will be worth it with what I'm driving it with now, especially at the rising cost of diesel.

Theirs not too much you can do that will improve the milage. Basic maintenance like changing fuel filter, spark plugs and such helps.

If you want more performance and decent fuel economy I would swap in an M50.

Do they have a diesel that would fit on that model. I'm a diesel fan but it's getting to high to be driving my truck all the time and I know small diesels for cars get incredibly great mileage.

Are you in North America or Europe?

You wont find a BMW diesel in NA for cheap.

Florida eh?

Diesels are really hard to find in NA (outside of trucks) because diesel isnt cheaper here like it is in Europe. Some places have diesel for as low as $0.25/L.

Garage
Hey guys,
Just bought a 1989 BMW 320i (E30) 4dr Auto, M20 SOHC 6cyl, never owned a BMW before, however I love cars (the sportier and hotter the better) and have always done as much work on them myself as possible. My engine is still running like a hairy dog, huge Flat spot on acceleration (almost stalls unless you give it a good boot) Spark Plugs have been replaced about 3 months ago, Leads are Beru Brand, Leads holder has snapped off mount(mount holes broken) and is simply hanging there supported only by the leads, Connection on to Plugs seem very loose and I have tried to tighten but they do not seem to adjust? strange? All 6 cylinders are receiving spark but I don't know if they are getting enough? I will replace with New Lead Set and see how it goes(new plugs too if I can) Does this sound like the Right Track?? Do they have Auto Choke on this Model? Have charged up battery too as is difficult to start atm-takes 2 cranks with full acc, to get her going. Do they have Electric Fuel Pump? It sounds to me like an Elec Fuel pumps clicks on, when ignition turned to On and then clicks off when Engine is shut down, is this true? Any help would be great,
Cheers

Alabama to be exact. Diesel is 3.68 per gallon. Trucks got a 29 gallon tank.

Get a 5 cylinder Mercedes benz engine out of an 80s mechanically injected diesel. or better yet, get the newer version- the OM-606 6 cylinder 3.0 litre and swap it in. They are also mechanically injected, and get about 30ish mpg in a benz. They are turbocharged, and DOHC. Not to mention reliable too. And about the same size as an M20. So theyll fit.

First off, with your plugs, did you get the PROPER KIND of plugs-the kind with REMOVEABLE tops? Those plug wires are ONLY compatible with plugs that DO NOT have the tops on. Second, they DO have electric fuel pumps, they DO NOT cycle on when you turn ON the ignition. They do not even pump fuel until an oil pressure switch on the block sees oil pressure. The 2 cranks is NORMAL. Remember that switch HAS to see oil PSI before itll turn on the fuel pump.
