i need a new strut in my 87 325. My mechanic told me that it would cost $225 for each strut. if i get both done i am pushing 500 including tax. my mechanic is a bmw mechanic. so i am not sure what brand of strut he will put in. Just today i took it to another mechanic and he quoted me a price of 125-150 for each strut ( mind you these prices include labor). i asked him what kind of strut he would use and he said Monroe. so my question is, are Monroe struts good? How do they feel when you drive the car. Will they give you that same ride?
Wow, that is way too much for strut inserts. Go online and buy some Bilstein Sports or HD's depending on the ride you want from Turner Motorsport. For 2 strut inserts and 2 shocks is $375 right now plus shipping. I wouldn't use Monroe struts. If you wanted a cheep but good replacemet I'd go with some KYB's.
BY ALL MEANS AVOID MONROE struts for your beemer! I did this on a GTI, and it was like driving a 70's Cadillac--very mushy.
Get the Bilsteins. OEM is either Bilstein or Boge. Koni is also good. I've heard mixed results about KYB, but have had very good experience with them on an integra. They're all not cheap in the short run, but last a long time and are worth the money. Monroe you will forever regret and its money wasted.
$500 does sound like a lot.
Good luck!!

If you want to go on the really cheap, I put these in my daughter's car and they are not too bad, although one of the rears did come apart, and my first set of fronts came with the wrong hardware. They did send replacement hardware when I told them about the issue. These are for a pair, and are probably as good as the Monroe's. For the prices you are talking you should get much better shocks.
lemme see what type they are...dont think they are bilistien though.
just the fronts right? do you need them w/spring, or just the struts alone?
probably looking around $50 for both struts plus shipping. $75 if u want the springs on them. what do u think is fair?
not sure on the miles, but no more than 20k for sure
im going out there in a few to pull parts for my friend, so ill get u details and be back in a few hours.
just one question. if you said that they were stock strut/springs how can they only have 20K on them. did you take them off as soon as you bought the car brand new?
no, but the person who owned the car had had them replaced w/factory parts. he was a pretty anal guy when it came to this car, thats why it ran so perfectly.
i have the reciepts for many of the parts on the car, even all the oil cahnges. the one for the struts was about 1 year old when i bought the car it doesnt say what make they are though. it had been driven by his wife to get around so i figure no more than 20k a year. i think its a pretty safe estimate.
