Hey everyone, this is the first time I'm changing the oil in this car, only had it for 3000 miles, I have some 10w-30 Mobil One & a K&N oil filter that the auto parts store guy sold me, Is this okay, or what you would recommend for this car?? '87 325is w/ 228k
Yea I run Castrol Gtx 10w40... always use regular oil in older cars with lots of miles. There are many opinions on wat weight of oil to use, so i would just look in the manual

yeah i have heard that alot about bmw engines, dont use synthetic, i personally run "castrol high mileage" for my car (91 318is, 170k)

Mobile one and Amsoil are better than any other non synthetic on the market. Synthetic oil is proven to be "better". The reason some people think you shouldnt use synthetic oils is because it doesnt gum up like regular oils and keeps the inside of the motor very clean, possably causing seepage in old gaskets. Personaly I would use it because of its higher quality dispite the possible leakage.

Synthetic is gooooooooooooooooooooood.....I could car less about leaks...i fix em...its called replacing gaskets... :P ok enough being a sarcastic d!ck haha...oil is notttt that big a deal...what does matter is consistancy...dont change weights a lot...use 10/40 for that mileage and stick to it...10/30 is fine but it provoke more wear which is good on breaking in engines but i think its broken in... ok i said i would stop with the sarcasm...sorry ghead

There is no noticeable difference in the performance synthetic or semisynthetic... There is too much physics here I am not going to explain it. Just use the oil that the manufacturer recommended and don't bother with things that you cannot understand 10w40 is the right kind for BMWs. And BMW recommends Castrol. So their engines are made and tested using this kind of oil... If this is 228K kilometers just put some 10w40 and everything will be ok. If it is miles maybe you should think for something like 15w40 or 15w45.

There's no replacement for displacement.
I need to know!
