Hey all... recently added a new Bimmer baby to the family. '91 318i sedan. Needs a little cosmetic tlc but mechanically very sound. Never had an M42 before though and just wanted to ask a couple of general questions before I go to teh parts store. Can I see the timing chain guides by removing the valve cover? Will it be very obvious when they are worn out and need replaced? (noise?) Also... is there a good chip available for this little gem? It runs really well but it could always benefit from a nice bump in power.
What rear end should this car have in it? It has a 5 spd. Oh and how much does this car weigh? It is a base model car... power windows but that's it... cloth etc... Are there any little quirks I should know about with these engines or are all of the bulletproof claims I've heard true? Oh... not sure how many miles are on it as the previous owner had it replaced but didn't know how many miles she had on her when she was installed. Judging from the looks and running of it... I'd say maybe 140k at the most. Did these engines have tubular headers from the factory? This one does. Any info would be very appreciated from those of you who are in the know on this little jewel!
