M20 thoughts

Hi. I'm having to get rid of my '88 318 (no i, carb power!) because after an accident last week, it's going to be an insurance write-off. I'm looking for another E30, there's no going back now I'm smitten, and I can afford a 318i or 320i. I'm used to looking at M10s and I'm wondering if there are many major common problems with the 6 cylinders that I should look for before spending hard-earned money.

I know what to look for bodywork-wise such as rear wheel arches etc, but are there any engine issues I should be aware of.

i got a 320i ----
seems to be woking fine for me
i blow down the autobahn over 100mph everyday and have no problems

Hi! Coming from a 4 pot I must say that the 6 is quite another world. But if you are looking after some performance go for the 325i.

hi zibello!

i see that you have an 83 E30 320i.. i have the exact same e30. i was wondering if you could post pics of your engine. i've never seen other engines exactly like mine. i have an m20, and from research, i think i have the L-jetronic. but i also have all sorts of hoses coming off the intake plenum going to different parts of the engine. my engine does not have the familiar cylindrical ICV on the throttle body.

Hi E30 Dude! I certainly will. I just need to get a digital camera. BTW, nice engine bay yours is. It seems pretty much the same mine. The injection is the L-jetronic. I thought it was common to all 320ies is it not?

at first glance, all m20 engines may look the same. but the more i get to know my engine, the more differences i see between it and other m20 engines. L-jetronic fuel injection was used up to 87, i think. and then motronic injection replaced it after 87..
