LSD ?'s on a 325es from a BMW nooooob

well me and my girl bought a 86 325es a few weeks ago. its a nice car and is are first BMW. damn fast car!

well i have some questions.

first, i have a low speed thump, thump, thump, in the rear, sounds like a limited slip to me. does the ES have a limited slip option? the tag on the dif has "S293 862" on it. any place i can look up that number? any one know what gearing that is? the Thump only happens when turning at slow speeds, going foward and reverse. is it any thing else it can be?

also the "brake light" (above the mirror) wont go off. what the deal? the brake lights work fine (or appear to work fine). how do i clear the computer to fix this? ( i have held the check button)

also the inspection light is on. what do those lights mean under it? how can i reset this?

I can't remember what the letters mean in the diff tag, but it is a 2.93, most likely with the LSD. The noise you hear is happening becuase you need to have the fluid changed, becasuse the additive, which i can't think of the name right now, is worn out.

Double check the break lights, or it could just be a fualty connection, somewhere.

The inspection light is pretty easy to reset

take a wire and connect plug 1 to plug 7, as shown in this pic and hold it there with your ignition set in aux for 30 secs

dude you hav the i motor i doubt you still have the ES differential or else you could do like 55 or 60 in first gear LOL

thanx all for the welcome and the info.

are my gears really a 2.93? wtf is that about? i easily do 60 in 3rd but that gear ratio is... well kinda odd to me. maybe a 3.27 but a 2.93? wierd? how can i find out?

well iam gona go get some new oil for the rear tommrow, what kind of diff oil goes in the LSD on a BMW? let me know so i can go buy some.

this car will be my girlfriends learning project on cars, so she is gona do all the work while i supervise and drink beer. LOL.

i guess my first real upgrade will be a ireland shifter kit with delrin and from thier i will fix my reverse lights since i will (actualy my girl) by in that area of teh car and have the center console torn out (that is a problem spot for teh revers light really correct?).

now is thier any diffrent about the ES moddle? where is a good place on the net to look at the diffrent options on the e30 series cars? what other engines are offered in 325's? 2.5l and a 2.7l correct? whats the best intake filter charger for the buck out thier? also needs to be cali approved for smog.

your final drive ratio is 2.93:1; i dont know what your confused about there.

there is a connector that goes through the rubber shift boot (rubber boot is under the leather one) which is for the reverse lights, you may want to check to make sure that both ends are tightly connected before you continue troubleshooting.
dont worry about getting a cone air filter, they really dont have much to offer, and theyve been known to reduce hp on e30's.

you checked the diff cover and it sed "S293.."

The "S" means it does have LSD.
