Just bought a 318i today, its a D-reg and i needs a little work doing to it before i can enjoy it fully.
Now she is blowing a little bit of smoke on tick over but it goes away when driving it normaly, there is also a little "ticking" noise coming from the engine, maybe head tapets or leaky exhaust to head gasket, not sure as i've not looked as yet.
Will this just be down to worn piston rings?
Also i would like to service the engine, change the headgasket and cambelt (if its cambelt and not cain driven, really don't know as i've never messed with a Bmw before)
Where is the best place to buy bits from and what oil should i use.
What should i look out for, problems?
The rear seems to move about a bit (tramp) and i would like to replace the bushes.
I hope you guys can help me on some of the above issues as i would be much appreciated.
I agree with witeshark, your valve timing could probably use some attention. And even if that doesn't solve the clicking, you'll get better gas mileage. You have a timing belt, not chain. Most people use 20-50 oil in E30s. I use it in my 325, and I don't think displacement makes a particular difference in what kind of oil you'd want.

No, any 318 is going to have a chain weather it is a M10 or M42 both have a chain that drives the cam. If you have the M42 use 10/30 if you have the M10 use 20/50.
i agree but they are very pricey...i pick most of my stuff from IE....BMW2002.com

I read that it was only the 318is that had a chain.
Why would that be?
