Left Butt-cheek seat failure

Both e30's I've owned have had tears right under my left buttcheek with a broken spring protruding...is this common with the vinyl seats...can the bottom portions of these seats be swapped, keeping the rest of the seat?

i don't know much about e30 seats, so i can't give you much info about the frequency of the problem; however, my 02 seats which are vinyl don't show any signs of springs poking through, so it probably just depends on how worn they get. Hope you can figure something out. If you do fix or replace them try putting a seat cover on next time before the seats deteriorate to that point.

My E30 vinyl seat was broken when I bought the car. The left side leaned back further than the right side. I pulled apart the back of the seat and there is a large phillips screw just above the seatback reclinining pivot that had come loose. The subframe was also bent, so I got in the back seat and used my legs to push out and bend it back into shape and now all is well with the seat.
