lean mixture ???

OK, so my car seems to be running on the lean side. It idles around 1400rpms. The car overheats at idle but not while driving, not sure if its related. I want to start replacing stuff one at a time. The previous owner never did anything to the car over an 8 year period, so maintenance was not kept up. It has a 325i afm on it but my car is a 88 325e. I am unsure if that would effect anything. There are no leaks that I can find either.

When I unplug my afm, the car dies. I dont think that is right either. I thought the car could be drove without it. Somethings not right here. Any help would be appreciated......Jamie

Is the clutch fan working rightly?

yeah, the fan checks out ok. i am pretty sure i need to bleed the cooling system again. i just checked it and the return hose to the resevoir is spitting coolant instead of a steady stream. looks like air still in there.

i think i am going to change out the afm first just because i know its the wrong part number. i think its sending the wrong signal making it idle up due to a lean mixture. any thoughts?????

That seems to make sense. Is the water pump good?

that's the biggest bag of things wrong I've seen or heard of for awhile. the 1400 rpm is the first clue

THERES MORE....I got home today to mess with the car and after driving it around, with no problems other than the high idle, I get home and cut it off. 10 minutes later it has a hard time starting but it finally does. It starts idling erratic and hits around 2500-3000 rpms and holding. I go do some burn outs and stuff in the hood and I get home and leave it to idle and it purrs like a kitten, again at the 1400 rpm level....???

I think its time for an electronic tear down and replace every electronic part. Start from scratch............................
