as I am still here (surprisingly) I just looked at/drove a 1976 2002 that is in very good condition as it is. An estate car in the owners hands from Virginia...200K miles but no matter.....I am thinking of buying this thing and doing a total restoration...I just saw a 1973 2002 that sold for over 20 grand on that Russo or whatever auction show on ESPN...it was a piece of junk, this is much better and the last year of the make.....and as we all know, the last year of the run represents the height of the development of that make...the subsequent 320i was woefully lacking (the 1977), actually a piece of crap...but that 1976 2002...a killer....
I'd pick it up if you can get it for a good price. I remember seeing someone in Euro Tuner who dropped an S14 into a 2002. Now what was a cool swap. I'm going to see if I can find it online somewhere so you can take a look at it.
i don't know, I was thinking of buying the thing for $1500 and fixing it up nice like and selling it for $15K is all...there are very, very few examples of this car that are even salvagable these days...and I can do it from the mechanical standpoint and my brother is a welder and my dad is a paint guy...
seems like between us we could pull this off and have some fun in the mean time...that's all....plus, this thing is stock, original Solex carb and exhaust, and has all of the service records as well as the original window sticker...it's a pearl I think......

I say go for it then. It would be one more 2002 that lives to see more time on the road. I just posted the other link to show the extreme's that have been done to the 2002.
floorpans not rusted, strut tower mountings solid, front turn signal housing in the front fender not rusted, dashboard not cracked, interior not crapped out, a little tear on the passenger (if you can imagine) seat but none on the drivers side...needs a good cleaning....synchros good, downshift from third to second smooth as silk....guibo good.....I don't know, seems like a potential sweetheart to me...and I don't even want to keep..already had 4 of these things...but you know..once a head, always a BMW head..damn....
If it's in the shape you're telling me it's in, then I can only make the assumptions and say it has been taken care of well. I actually saw a 2002 not too long ago for sale but it was rusting heavily. The owner wanted $750 for it but I knew if I bought it to work on it would suck up a lot of money.
yep, that is the absolute problem that took these guys out back in the day...rust..they simply did not have the zinc coated rust proofing on the soft steel they do today...this one has no rust that would pose a problem as far as the frame/body goes, much less the superstructure....it's fine.....this is why I feel it might be worth going for...I can fix the mechanical stuff easy...it's a little 4 banger...but the body, you can't deal with cancer..and this one is cancer free....true
there are VERY FEW 2002s left around anymore....these things are like 1900 lbs and can develop around 150 HP with very little tuning and get like 25 MPG and are more point and shoot handling than any current BMW out there. These things are where the legend came from...believe me..these are like giant go-karts with a badge on them....and I have owned 4 of these and a 633CSi, a 535i and still have a 325iC and this little bastard still felt better for out and out performance/handling then all of those...and I haven't gotten my hands on this thing yet (as I haven't actually bought it yet)....it just brought back a flood of memories is all...perhaps I wax,,,,
You wont get 15k. Just because you saw someone once sell something on a tv show or whatever doesn't mean its the rule, its the exception. Just trying to save you from thinking you're about to make a fortune and feeling disappointed when you don't.
maybe not, but maybe so...if I don't try how will I ever know? My stepbrother is a welder, my father runs a furniture dealership and I am a mechanic...what the heck...it's possibly worth a shot...plus we have collectively restored several classic American automobiles, the most recent being a 1966 Chevy Impala....one before that was a 1959 Lincoln Continental with the rear window that retracted...so, I don't know...may work, may not work...I don't care...we will see.....
and, on top of it all, might just keep it if comes out nice like....it's not about the money, it's about the doing it that counts here for us.....very few opportunities present themselves in life where you can even do this kind of stuff..so..whatever....
