just got a 318i today, first BMW. when you start off in first gear the engine bogs down, just like if you were trying to start in second, once you hit about 3000rpm's it drives fine, ran great at 75 on the highway. any idea what the trouble/fix is ?

thanks very much.

welcome to the world of gutless torque less 4 bangers.

absolutely gutless below 4k rpm. my z3 is the same way.. even compared to my 6 cyl 3 series cars

Could be a vacumm leak somewhere maybe. Check the intake boot for any cracks and any vacuum hoses.

Your timing is off.

Mine did the same exact thing; the little 4-bangers are very sensitive to timing and vacuum and such.

And they aren't THAT slow, and with $3+ gas, I think we have the upper hand. :P
