My 1996 381i automatic died this last weekend. Needs a new engine. It is not drivable. although the paint and intereior are in very good condition I was thinking that because of how old it is I would just sell it to one of those "We'll pay you for your junk car" places and they could tow it away. My mechanic said they typically pay only like $50 bucks.
My brother-in-law thinks that would be a big mistake and that I should try to sell it on online and thinks I should be asking $2000. I don't think anyone would be willing to shell out even $500 for a car that doesn't run no matter how pretty it is.
Can you guys give me any feedback and what this car is worth? Junk or sell?
You do what is called, parting out a car.......E36 parts are wanted out there! You will make a lot more than $50.00......you can also place an add: example: parting out or take whole car for $1,500....
I would say that you will never get $500 for a BMW that you can't drive right now. I would say that the same BMW 3 series is worth around $2-3K, maybe more, if you part it out, I have done it before. Several times....
Thank you for the responses guys. I thought for sure I was going to take a huge hit on this.
I do have space to store it and I live in SE minnesota. As for parting out a car I have very little mechanical know-how (scientist, If I can't see it under a microscope, I don't know how it works.) Would people just come over and take the parts out themselves? Is there a place where I can find out what they should be paying me for those parts?
Try to find a local BMW shop and see if they would want it for a parts car? Or try to contact your local BMW club and see if anyone would be willing to purchase it.
Just an idea if you dont have the know how on taking cars apart.
Only A Suggestion, buy Ur'self A Workshopmanual And Then Start Stripping It From There And At The Same Time You Can Take Up Some Mechanical Knowledge With It:d
Yes on all of those things you mentioned. Yes people would come over and take parts out. I would take as many parts as you are able prior; inventory and store. Then I would look up what these parts are worth new and then say 12% for the part. For instance, an altenator is probably around $170 rebuilt, junk yard probably around $40....if you have an altenator (which I am sure you do) ...tell em something like $25, they will come if you sell it, hell a power window switch is worth $4 if you need one....a new one is like $17!! I am telling you, it's possible to buy another used BMW by parting out the old one if you have the time, reason and motivation. I bought my first 5 series with the proceeds from an, otherwise, abandoned 320i. It's a cool game, if you have the time.....best of luck
