Interfence Engine

Hi Guys,

I am new to the forum, I just joined almost a week ago & I hope we can all help eachother to know more about our Bimmers .
I want to know if any of you guys have the E30 complete service manuals as I like to do the stuff in the car myself & this will help me alot using the D.I.Y's.
Also I want to ask if someone knows if the M40 1.8L engine is an interference engine or not and whats the millage for changing the timming belt & the pulleys.

It uses a timing chain, not a belt, and yes, all bmw engines currently in production and as far back as I can remember have been interference engines.

First thanks for the info about the interference engine part but I am sorry to tell that you are wrong about this but the 1.8 L engine M40 is with belt not a timing chain as i checked it by myself, anywayz thanks for the advise.

My two cents:

Yeh my old brand new crate M20B25 2.5 liter i motor has a belt with tensioner.
Not sure if I can convert to a chain? would be nice.
But anyway for an E30 get the Bently manual, there is no substitute.

or the OEM manuals on CD off ebay. havent tried this yet.
What are you working on a 318i, 318is or M3?

The M10 4 Cylinder 1.8L has a timing belt, it is an interference engine. (it's basicly the m20 with the last 2 cyl cut off.) Used in the E21.

The M40 4 Cylinder DOHC (1.8 or 1.6) has a timing chain, it is an interference engine.

Note: ALL "stock" e30 4cyl motors have a timing chain.

Rfitz25, My car is currently an OEM 318i but there is a project that i might start soon if I have enough time to dedicate to it, which is installing a turbo and i am currently looking at the mods required in the exhaust manifold, oil lines, optimum Turbocharger size T28, Oil pressures for the waste gate & the BOV...........etc. and i hope i have the time to finish this study and gather all the info required to do this project to be able to do it.
If anyone of you guys have any experiance with installing a turbocharger in an OEM engine that would help me alot.
