the cars in pretty good shape, it was mechanics daughter owned, has 150,000 miles, little rust around the trunklid but hardly noticeable. new wheels. whats the "es" supposed to mean. besides it redlining at like 5 grand and the 2.7 L. my last one was a 325is. as far as i know, that was the sport package. ill have pics soon.
ES is Eta Sport, the efficient motor with the i valve springs basically (if I remember right). I think it was spec'd like an i (better OBC, Seats etc..), rev's slightly higher than a standard e, but was still more efficient than the i. Yet it wasn't as slow as the standard e (hey, don't knock 'em, I LOVE my eta!). Get a good chip and that motor will really wake up!

Some of the nice things about the 2.7 is it's torque, 170 ft/lbs. With it's long stroke it doesn't need high gas guzzling RPMs since it makes all it's power below 4300 rpm, which is a good thing due to the rise in gas $$$. The only real difference with the 325, 325e and 325es is mostly trim and interior options (leather seats, spoiler, valance panel, etc.) some got stiffer springs and different shocks but mechanically the 84-87 2.7 are identical. The real changes happened in 87 with the 325i cars. Not only with styling, they saw a bump in hp (168 for the "i" vs. 121 for the "e") needing over a 1000 RPMs more to make it though, torque only dropped about 6 ft/lbs. That's why the i's are more desirable. Not to mention most don't like the diving board chrome bumpers on e's... :lol:

The Super Eta has the i valve springs, yes, but just because he has an es doesnt mean he has the Super Eta engine. The only year that BMW made those was 1988, the last year for the e altogether. Since his is an '86, he's got to regular Eta like you and I do.
Good info Aether! I was not aware of the year limitations, I appreciate the correction. I have been thinking about doing a "super eta" conversion myself. Get a junkyard eta head, get the extra oil galley drilled, machine the head flat and square, and have the i springs popped on. I don't have the dough right now, so it's just a pipe dream at the moment... but a man can dream can't he!

And Josh, do you think you could retrofit an '88E head for less time, money and beer than just throwing in an M20B25? I heart the Eta; but it seems to me that upgrading from one E to another is a marginal step at best.
But hey, if you want an Super Eta, then darn it you make yourself a Super Eta.
