the victim: 1992 E30 cabrio, DOHC I-4 (M50 i think)
the problem: idle goes up-down-up-down

not a huge change, but like 800 to 1100 RPM.

is this indicative of an old O2 sensor?
i cannot remember the last time it was changed.

other ideas?

There could be a vacuum leak somewhere also. I hope you find the problem

do E30s have ICV? That's a common E36 issue. Just a thought.

usually the symptoms of a vacuum leak are dropping revs when clutch in, sometimes motor dies, revs return to normal or somewhat normal.

No, don't worry. It's cool. I'm taking it back for us.

ICV? Idle Control Valve?
This is the same engine that's in an E36 318i

next time she starts doing it tap your ICV with a mallet, nothing hard mind you, just some love taps and see if she starts to idle fine....if she does then you got yourself a bad ICV.........

but also check for vacuum leaks......even though i am leaning more towards a bad ICV at this junctor.....

so now the $20 question... how to locate the ICV?

honestly, I've had this car for a LONG time and never had to do anything under the hood except oil changes (she's only got 120K miles on her) so bear with me.

I *am* mechanically inclined, I just don't own a shop manual, yet.

they don't have ICV but an Idle control module.. it's a box which controls the air control and what not. And if I recall (going on a 91 m20 325) it's by your other computers if I recall. I could be wrong on location though
