Idle Sputter

I drive a 89 325i convertable and two days ago it started "sputtering" for a few seconds when I first turn her on (by her I mean the car)--but after a few seconds it idles fine until you give it a little gas and then it sputters for a second until you give it enough gas to take it over 1100 rpm's ----and then once taken out of gear it sputters for a few seconds again and then returns to a normal idle....what could be wrong??

clean your idle control valve.... do a search on these forums for the word "idle", then pick through any of the 100s of posts to look for more answers
