I have a '87 325 ic. Today the car began to idle strangely. It cycles from 2000 to 1500 rpms and back to 2000 over about a 1 second period when I sit with the clutch in or with the engine out of gear.

If the car sits off for a while, when I start it, the engine goes to 2000 rpms for a short period until the engine warms up a little, then the car starts to idle as described above again.

When I drive it, it seems to drive fine and cruises ok until I pull up to a stop sign and let it idle...also it does jerk a little at very ow speeds in first gear when little or no gas is applied.

Does anyone have an idea what could cause this?

Soundes like a vacum problem. Check the intake monifold and the throttle body.

same thing happened to my car

it was something to do with the idle control module... had it replaced... first with used one which didnt work, then with new one which solved the problem

its bloody embarassing being at a light when its doing that. people kept thinking that i wanted to race... my stupid friends even put up a sign in the window saying "I don't want to race!!!"

hope that helps

open the tube or hose or whatever u want to call it just before the throttle body and spray some cleaner in it i did this to my car and its fine.
while u spray or have the tube open remember to rec the car cuz it will shut off since u are bipassind the air flow cemsor so it will try to shut off if it does just start it again or have someone in the car reving it so it wont stall.

good luck and dont crush ur fingers on the throdle
