Thanks BMDubya and to anyone to give me further insight toward a high idleing but smooth running, clean ex-fumes (despite rattling cat.), regardless hot or cold. Can't find ICV in Bentley. Checked the advanced vacuum solenoid. drenched the vac. hoses w/ carb cleaner and well nothing further.
She's an 85 318i with over 350k mi, but still fun to drive, and fires on the first crank.
New cat needed? Could this prolong idle hot and cold?
its the ICV is that's connected to your air flow boot that's between air box and throttle body. how do you clean ICV?

pull it out and drench it with carb cleaner and WD-40

My trouble is a high, cold and hot engine idle. Runs smooth. Intake boot is fine; no obvious split hoses. Thermostat reads normal, core is not an issue.
Looking under the metal cover (fixed to the head cover) -I can't see it clearly. the throttle cabels (2) and the "lever" they are fed through seem like something one could adjust AT THE LEVER. The lever looks spring loaded and you can get your index finger on the thing to raise the idle. I wonder if you can adjust that to release a mm or 2 further to lower the idle.
Someone said the cold start injector needs to be checked. I guess if it were stuck then it would always idle high, but
THE IDLE RISES FROM 1500 to 2000 after warming up, always!!! ghead
IM WARNING YOU!!! Your idle will never be "Off" The way these cars are designed they idle themselves out...you gotta keep hunting...check the water temperature sensor? and did you check the O2? What about your DME?

Immense thanks for the warning. I have not tinkered with that and I'm gald you're there, really. Thanks
The O2 sensor is next, then. Do you clean and lube both ends at mani and "upper" by habit,....I mean should I. You sound as though you've been here before.
My cat. has to be replaced soon. It's already shot. Looks like $270+ from the little online looking i have done. I read in Bentley that that f-r can cause enough heat to cause a fire as well as screwing up the DME sensory's ability to properly mix. Would you second that? Yeah I care about the environment, but little dough @ the holidayz

would it be a good idea to just spray some of each in bucket and soak it in there or one bucket of carb and one bucket of wd-40 or better just to spary it in there

just pull it off completely and hose it out with some WD40 and let it sit for a while

i admit i am in a similar situation with my VW Scirocco...only it wont idle out...it will just die when i let off the throttle....things i replaced:
timing
valve adjust
Distruter cap
Rotor
Plugs
Wires
fuel filter
both fuel pumps
all hoses
fuel filter
every vaccum line
every gasket
alternator
keep in mind i bought my car not idling...so now i can safely say this is the result of the previous owner messing with the idle screw...now i go adjust it cause i have done everthing else...its always the LAST resort....
