I just picked up a 1988 325i conv with 112,000 Miles. The exterior is in great shape and the top looks like new...the seats were cracked so I dyed the interior and they came out great...
The car overall is very nice for what I paid for it.... I believe it has every option except for the power top.
Well the main thing is when I start the car up it revs kinda high..(the rpms are still under 1000).. almost like a sixties muscle car... then if you dont give it some gas it starts to sputter and it stalled on me twice in the past two weeks, but then you can start it right back up......once you drive it for a minute it idles normally and has plenty of power.....
The car was inspected 2500 miles ago .......and I got it from the original owner....in the past month the timing chain had been replaced along with a new master cylinder and hoses....The car is very solid and gets up and cruises at 100 mph no problem
I also broke the handle for the convt. by mistake.... i didnt hear the hatch pop and then when i pulled it .... the hatch was indeed already open ...so now the handle is still connected from the the top but not the bottom....its a plastic handle ...which i think is a poor design.....it looks like the whole assembly can be removed by two screws.....can i order the assembly with a new handle?
Could someone please help...I'm about ready to sell the car....
The handle is an easy fix. you can either order one from bavarian or you could probably find a used unit cheap on ebay. The idle sounds different. Mine idles high for about 2 seconds then drops down to around 500 rpm's. Could be your idle control valve, but then again perhaps not. The other guys should be able to help out more there.

It does sound like an ICV problem, usually runs around $150 plus install.

Two wheels or Four, I'm happy as long as the throttle is pinned.
First and easiest thing to do is use SeaFoam, which reduces/eliminates carbon buildup. You can add it to your gas, crankcase and intake to reduce all carbon build up problems. Must change your oil after 50 miles of putting in the seafoam, due to its ability to breakdown oil. This should smooth out your idle, if not fix it, since its a old car. If it doesnt fix it go to the next step(if you havent already checked), which is finding a vacuum leak or an icv problem.
I always run SeaFoam right before I change my oil, as its recommended by the manufacturer. This just helps keep your engine running smooth and helps keep your engine in smooth shape.
