I have an 86 eta motor and have read that putting a diff. head on and a new crank and injectors will give me a higher redline and more power. What do you think?
Do you think a new different cam will help at all because M20B27's cam turns slower or something that and thats why you have a lower redline than the other M20 motors.
if you google the words "which engine do i build up the M20B27" it will be on the dtmpower forum. thats where i got the info about changing the head and injectors.
86 is a good year! too bad you dont have an es so you would have an LSD diff.
well here is what you need to do.
To gain a higher redline out of your eta you will need to chip it or take out the 1.0Motronics that is slowing you down and upgrade to what all 88-89 e30 have which is 1.1/1.3Motronic, the only difference in the 1.1M and 1.3M is that 1.3M uses the updated #173 ecu. which is what is going to give you your higher redline which is 6800 and if you chip the #173ecu you will have 7000+ redline.
so now that you know what you need to do here is a link to my 2.7i how to and 1.1/1.3 Motronic upgrade!
thanks i do happen to have a couple of friends who know more about BMW engines then alot of the BMW certified techs so im in good shape on the making sure it will run aspect. Is the higher redline going to have an effect on were my peak torque and horse power will be, if not then then changing the motronic will not be worth it. And is just changing the motronic going to make my cam turn faster or will i need to upgrade that to? thanks
.... My 325es had plenty on nice low end torque get your self a LSD, comp chip, K&N intake, and exhaust and you'd me good!

Thanks for all the input but all this wont be for a while. im going work on the exterior first it performs fine for what i need at the moment, but all those are cheaper alternatives to putting the M motor in it when it comes time to work on the performance ill make the choice depending on how much money i have to blow. once again thank you.
First off, you can't "turn the cam faster"... it will always turn exactly half the speed of the crankshaft! You may have higher lift... longer duration or you can advance or retard the cam timing. And as for increasing your redline... not real smart considering the valve train on the ETA connot handle it and above 5500 you start to float the valves as the springs can't keep up. If you wan't more HP and a bit sportier mill... just put a 2.5l M20 in it... for that matter if your going to go to that much trouble, just find a m52 or an S52 and do it up right. ETA= low end torque, longevity, excellent fuel mileage, and ease of drivability. Not meant to be sporty.
Not sporty, yes untill you turn it in to an "i car" for say with 1.3M and some i parts.
Then... torque monster
And yes once you increase your redline on the eta you will want to beef up your valve springs with i double valve springs if you will read my links^^^ you can read.
