Hello, i just bought my first bmw. actually i traded my car for it. It is a 1984 318I, it is very basic, i hope im in the right place. I need to know if it is a hydralic clutch, or if it is a mnaul clutch. This information would be very helpful. thnaks Chris.

im pretty sure all E30's have hydrolic clutches, so yes i would go ahead and assum yours does too, you can check by looking on the transmission to see if there is a hydrolic line going to it that would be a verry easy way to check, or by pushing the pedal down you can tell the difference between hydrolic and mechanical.

ok, ill check. teh reason i ask is because i was told it needs a new clutch, but the clutch seems to work sorta, like most of the pedal has free play until a couple inches befreo it hits the floor, then it feels like a normal clutch. if i hold downt the brake, start it, and let off the brake, the car slowly moves forward. but if i holdt eh brake, and let off teh clutch, teh car dies, so thats why i thyink it may just need adjusted. i was aslo told it needed a starter, but i put the key in, it started, and so now i dont knwo what, do you think it still needs one, or does the guy not know what hes talking about. thanks, Chris

For sure there is a hydraulics in your e30

Here is a diagram of such clutch :

BTW before you will change the clutch you should check the brake fluid (as far as i konw its the same in clutch system) , sometimes clutch doesn't work properly becouse fluid is too old , it might help and won't cost too much

sounds like it could be your master cylinder too, on the tranny there is a tube looking thing that the brake line screws into, if thats making any weird noises or could make no noise that might need to be replaced. also try bleeding your clutch. (there is a nut on the cylinder to do this) and then after that it should be good to go. remember while bleeding to keep adding fluid.

also the started doens't sound like it needs to be replaced, if it makes grinding noises it might be your flywheel or the gear on your starter but if it works it works if it doesn't well then your off the hook.
