how long do batteries last?

the reason I ask is my battery is maybe 4 years old...and I couldn't start her a minute ago....after a jump start she runs like a champ....is there a way to fix a battery? or is the only option buying a new one?

sorry if that's a noobie question...

thanks!

Batteries last anywhere between 3-6 years.

I ended up buying a new battery the next day.....I knew it wasn't the alternator because I replaced that 2 years ago....

I probably could have squeezed a few more weeks out of the battery...but with a bitter winter right around the corner I decided to just replace it...now she starts like a champ....doesn't even hesitate

^^^ no kidding...I didn't even get my hands dirty...I stood there while the guy at Checker checked the battery, went and found a new one, brought it out to my car, installed it, and took the old one back inside.....all I did was pop the hood...

it was almost like "drive through car repair"....
