Just replaced water pump, timing belt, and thermostat in my 1987 325is. yet after reassembling the engine it still heats up..fast. there is no visable coolent leak. the car randomly will start to heat up and i have to shut it off before it overheats. Ive flushed the coolent, re-filled. multiple times. yet i start it up, it starts to warm up, them all of a sudden it heats up fast. any suggestions? Ideas?

Check the fuse for your aux fan. Mine blows on really hot days when the fan and other electrical connections on that circuit can't keep up. Try that... otherwise else... lower temp thermostat (you can get one 12 degrees Cecius colder then stock... typical for E30's to over heat) or new radiator... not good... hope that helps.

big ole' air pocket in the system........you need to turn your heat to full blast and take off your coolant cap.........you need to bleed all the air out of your system.

Agreed. It sounds as though you have an air pocket in the system.
