Help !! - Cluster Light - Computer Light Issue

I have an '89 325is and when I turn my lights on, the right side of my instrument cluster (tach/gas) does not light up. In addtion the onboard computer next to the radio also do not illuminate. ghead However, aside from not illuminating they items function normally. If you have come across this please let me know. Thank you.

i have that same problem the tach and gas my obc works fine but the tach and gas sucks at night sometimes

try replacing the bulbs there are 2 in the main cluster 1 each side of your dash mine also on the gas rev and mpg gauge side had also gone i just replaced the bulb and hey would you believe it they worl again loljust a though

I have the same thing happen to mine, mostly when it gets cold out. The tach also will read zero....my fix, give a tap on the cluster "glass" and everything seems to work just dandy.

You can replace the light bulbs in the OBC yourself if you solder some radio shack bulbs in there. Bit of a job though. I forget the link, but if you search around you can find the radio shack part number for those bulbs.

PROCEDURE - 6 SERIES 82 THRU 88
1. Remove fuses #27, 21, 12 and 10.

2. Remove the two Phillips head screws at the top of the instrument cluster, which secure the cluster assembly into the dashboard.

3. Pull the cluster out slightly and turn it toward a 45-degree angle so that the right side is pulled out farther than the left side.

4. The two screws securing the computer unit are now exposed. Remove the screws and pull the unit from the cluster by angling it as required and pulling toward the rear.

5. Gently turn the computer unit clockwise to expose the three wiring connectors. Gently remove the connectors from the rear window defogger and hazard switches. Pull out the center discon-nect on the computer connector and slide the connector off.

6. On the right side of the computer unit, at the top, is a white plastic protrusion. This is the light bar. Pull the light bar out using needle nose pliers. Push the new light bar into position in the computer unit.

7. Reinstall the wiring connectors and install the unit into the cluster. Reinstall the cluster.

you can try wiggling the wire cables on the left side under the dash, there is a bunch of wires (maybe an inch thick), my lights including the heater and obc lights started working after i wiggled that cable (took me damn long time to figure out any way to make my instrument cluster light up again )
