Help on 1990 325ic

Auto has good body with some cosmetic issues. It has been stored every winter (we are in MN). 80,000 miles

Had to downshift recently to avoid collision. This lost Reverse, 1st & 2nd gears.

Dealer states that we need:
  • Transmission
  • Clutch
  • Main belt

They are offerring a rebuilt transmission for $2400 with a 2 year warrenty.

Also available to us is a transmission with 80000 on it with no warrenty for $500. This belongs to the shop manager and would be a private deal.

Questions:
  • How many miles should a transmission last under normal conditions?
  • Do we sepnd the 2400 or the 500?
  • Is 500 a decent price?
  • Or do we sell the car as-is and cut the losses?

Thanks...confused and need advice used:

how much do you love the car? I'd sell it as-is to cut future losses... but then again... the rebuild for $500 is a pretty good deal... even with 80000miles on it. I'd figure that most BMW's of that age should get at least 100000 before any minor problems occur... I've seen E30's from the earlier series getting over 240000 KM's on the original tranny.

Clarification

The rebuit tranny is $2400 with 2 year warrenty
The used tranny is $500 with 80k on it

DJProfessor is an unknown quantity at this point
i personally have 240k on my tranny.....only problem i have is the pinion bearing whining......but she is still rocking.

i say go for the cheaper deal with the tried and true transmission.

Thanks to all

We are having the used 80k mile tranny put in.

Additionally, we are replacing the timing belt & likely a new clutch.

Hope it's worth it...
