For the past few days my car has been popping out of third gear. This morning I couldn't get it to go into third gear without it making a horrible grinding noise! (it makes the noise right after I let off the clutch)
I can get it into third if I push in the clutch and let the RPMs drop, lift the clutch gently, then listen/feel for a small pop and then it will engage.
I'm new to manual tranny's, especially foreign manual trannys. Before I tear this thing apart. what should I be looking for? (i'm thinking blown synchros)
used i would think the synchro's are gone, i've heard BMW's tend to have problems with that gear. Have you checked the seals? if they are leaking, even minutely, third is the first to go.

You might be able to buy yourself a little time...
If it truly is dead, can I use the transmission from a six cylinder or do I have to hunt down another getrag 240?

^^^don't know for sure...

take all of the Transmission oil out, ATF fluid can save the synchro's if they are in bad shape, but this sounds like the synchro is gone too bad, but the 6cyl won't fit, sorry you'll have to totally restore this box, and findin a 4cyl tranny shouldn't be so hard LSA oil can help too

this might be allitle off topic but i just can wait to ask
i want to do a manual conversoin and i remember you told me that i need to cut the flooring to fit the hydrolick ram for the clutch. i found that theres a opening on the floor and the brackest for the clutch can be bolted, what else needs to be done or to look for?
hmmm...mount points for master and slave cylinders, and check trans tunnel for shifter clearance...e-brake shouldn't be a problem, (drawing on experience from other vehicles for this, so bear with me. Never done a trans swap in a bmw)...cosmetically, you have the center console from a manual? i'll try to think of some more and then repost later.
