yes i have power to the + side of the coil when i check continuity on the - side it shows open.. if i run a ground from the - side of the coil it sparks
well i sent the car to bmw dealer... seems napa sold me the wrong master relay so it cost me 206.00 to learn to get parts from the dealer.....part was only 23.00 cost me 80.00 towing + 206.00 dealer troubleshooting... we live and learn hugh

ha alteast they told you what the problem was, i took my car there 3 times cause i couldn't figure out what was wrong and they said the car had no problems every time! its pathetic, ill never take my car there again. and i figured out the problem myself and fixed cause those bastards couldn't do a thing to help. that and they gave me a curtesy car for the winter a 2003 3 serries to burn arround in, and they blamed a bunch of body damage that you couldn't see on me that i didn't do! and then i had to fork out 2 grand for it cause they're bastards. anyways thats all for now
I think my main relay is bad also!!!! please help...
I am working on a beautiful 1987 325is for a very good friend and I am having the same problem with his car...
Fuel pumps do not run and prime up when the key is turned to on, and when you turn the car over, there is no spark either... :confused
I can jump the relay out and get the pumps to run.... and they definetely pump fuel (I checked it for flow and color) and there is power going to the relay from the battery and from the key-on source, so, I believe the ignition source from the key is good, but the main relay or computer is not grounding the relay to make the pumps run for some reason...
..am going to check the coil positive to chassis ground today and see if the coil positive is getting voltage... if it is, it sounds like I have a bad main relay also...
I have already disassembled the main relay and cleaned it with electronic parts cleaner, but there was no change...
So, it sounds like that is my main next shot at getting this beauty running....
This car has sat in a shop for the last 7 years and it has not run in over 4 years now, obviously because of a no-start problem...
I live in Tyler, Texas, so BMP is only a short drive away for all the parts on the whole car...
I replaced every hose, fuel line, belt, new spark plug wires, plugs, o2 sensor, new air filter, oil and coolant changed....
He is going today to go get a main relay from BMP to see if that is what it is...
I tested the ignition switch and it seems to show good to all terminals, and the starter definetly turns the engine over...
I am so glad to have found this forum...
BTW- this car has 52,000 miles on it and it has one tiny ding on the driver's side door... that's it, not another flaw....

Let me add this... the relay that I am calling a main relay is about 3-1/3 inches long and does not have a normal pin circuit like a typical 4 or 5 pin little square relay...
This relay has pins arranged like this....

By the way, this is a 1987 325is, with Motronic electronic engine control, so it is a crossover year...
My buddy got a main relay from BMP and it is a little white square chunk relay with 5 pins and they said it will replace this relay that I am calling the main relay...
:confused
:wtf
I ain't no rocket scientist.... but, then again.... nevermind... haha
also, the coil is getting voltage to the + when the key is on, but something is not grounding it or the fuel pump...
all the wiring continuity tests seem to be right on it...

Ok, ok... I was looking at the wrong relay... The main relay seems to be discolored white... it is sitting next to the fuel pump relay... durh....
sorry....
I am gonna swap it out tonight and see it that fixes it... I sure hope so...
