Faulty Odometer

I have an 89, 316i which i bought a few weeks ago as a project to do up. It passed its mot needing just 2 front springs , so i have only been driving it for a few days. Have just noticed that the trip meter wasnt working. After further investigation i have discovered that the odometer itself is still displaying the same mileage as when i got it 3 weeks ago. The old mot has exactly the same mileage on it as well. so its displayed the same mileage for over a year ( possibly longer than that }.It was off the road for a year though.
the rest of the instrument cluster is working fine with no problems, does anybody have any ideas about fuses and relays that may be SPECIFIC to the odometer.
Any other info or advice on this matter would be very welcome.

they have little plastic gears which often break, you can get them from bavauto.com if you want to fix it yourself

i had the same problem it was the connector on the back of the instrument cluster

I just bought a '91 325i and the speedo/odomoeter doesn't work due to a wire or wires according to the seller. What would I need to replace or do to make it work?
