Hello all. I'm a newbie to the forum. I am about to tow my 1984 325e to get a fan pulley problem of some sort fixed. The fan fins are all broken off and the fan base itself(rotor?) is wobbly. This in turn might have broken the pulley, I'm not sure. Do any of you recognize this problem? I've posted at other forums in which I've been told to check motor mounts. Considering the spoon feeding this car got from previous owners, I'm not quite convinced this is the problem. I don't know. I'm not a mechanical geek.
Any suggestions? If you can could you list the possible price of the part needed to be replaced or repaired?
Thank you

right
sounds seriouse but its silly
first of all im under the impression this happended when the car was on...
and not crashed...
then also that you were not "red-lineing " it until you seared the main bearings and the shaft broke...
it is worth the effor to check the resistance of all rolling things that belt is originally attacthed to...meaning another part might have stopped spinning and made the fan(the biggest and most fragile) off-center.. in turn hitting some housing or even your Radiator...
when the plastic fan hits something metallic at 7400rpms its going to break velocity and fly all over the place...
the good news is there would be signs of this catastrophy and where the fan hit...
and more good news
is that when you find evidence of damage the fan hit or the thing...look at the oppisite direction of the found damage...
in when a reaction is found at the oppisite end is sometime the first action.
now if its just a alternator that broke the fan your in luck..
but more important is the following q's
- how many miles,
- evidence of oil in the pan..?
- time since timing belts / v-belts change
-what physically broke the fan blades?
-were you driving at the time?
-did it seize or will it start now.?
-is the belt still attatched to the fan?
