Exclamation Engine Troubles

Ok, my car is doing some weird things and I was hoping someone could help me in figuring out what is wrong with it. I have an '85 318i; it’s a five speed. A few nights ago when I fired her up the tach needle started to jump around quite a bit and the engine idle seemed a bit jumpy. By the time I got home it seemed to be ok. The next day it’s doing it again but even worse and it stalled, but fired right back up. After that I turned around and headed back home and the needle was jumping as was the engine. Driving on level ground with my foot steady on the pedal the car felt like it was lurching back and forward, like the engine was still surging while it was in gear, I haven't driven her since. Any ideas? I can think of many but don’t want to spend lots of money trying to figure it out. Thanks.

Check your TPS, then check your coolant temp sensor.
