I have a 1987 325is and I am thinking about buying a 1987 325 sedan. I'd like to know if it's possible to swap the engine from my 325is to put into the 325 sedan? If so, please let me know.
umm.... the 325 (no I ) has the Eta block right? which then that would be a no... btw what it the redline on the 325 same as you is?

They're both e30 models same year and same m20 engine. The difference is the displacement. the 325 is a 2.7 liter and the 325is is a 2.5 liter. I figure if the 325is has a smaller engine, the conversions shouldn't be a problem. Anyone disagree?
nope I wouldnt bother.... to my knowlage you need all the wiring and ecu swapped over.... not worth it for the small bit of HP....

the 2.7 makes less power than the 2.5...but makes more TQ...if you want a higher reving faster road race car use the iS motor...if you want to be faster stop light to stop light...use the Eta get a chip and a 3.46 LSD for it...the torque will scare you...lol

So it is actually possible to swap engines? That's what is most important to me. The reason why I say that is because I totaled my 325is, but the engine is still good. I just bought the 86 325 sedan today. I didn't want to put money to waist so I bought it hoping that when time comes to replace the engine in the sedan i can just pull the engine out of the 325is. I had the engine rebuilt last year and it has under 3500 miles so it would be a complete waist to junk my car or sell it for less.
yep piece of cake...just do a search for it over on E30tech or R3vlimited, theres a few threads on it there
