Ok so my 86 325 has taken a lot in its years. i has 200k miles on it and i am thinking about doing an engine swap. I was thinking about the M3..can anyone tell me about it? is it hard to swap? is it possible? is it worth the time and money? Info baby!
Im going to assume you are reffering the the S14 from the E30 M3 because you didnt specify, but the S14 engine is a High Performance 4 clinder, rated at aroun 190 hp. Thus means its going to break a lot, and they do. Not to mention the engine has very little low end power thus making it bad for a daily driver. BMW only ran a 4 cylinder in the E30 M3 because it was limited to it in its class for racng. The engine is very expensive and just not worth it. The M50 on the other hand it rated near the same horse power, extremely inexpensive, offers tons of low end torque and has more tuning potential. Not to mention parts are dirt cheap and the motor is strong as an ox...
If you were reffering the the S50 or S52, yes you can swap them too but i would say go for the S50 because its going to be a lot easier being that its OBDI but for the cost of parts/horsepower the differences between the M50 and S50 are minimal, not to mention the fact you can usually get an M50B25 for about $1200 with transmission and wiring harness S50 will run about $3500+ for all of that and only makes about 20 more whp. The M50 with chip and intake and exhaust and underdrives usually makes around 200whp S50 with same setup is around 230whp...so is 30hp worth the extra $2000?

I've seen you make reference to the fact that you can get a transmission also, is this a requirement? I've been looking at various engine swaps for my eta and haven't been looking at tranny's. Do I need to be?
Also, is there a spreadsheet or website that has ALL of the models that came with specific engines? If I want to look for an M50B25 what exactly do I need to look for?
