:help I took My E30 325i Cabrio into the smog shop and the guy started his procedure. When it came to the part where he revs it at tests the timing/smog at a certain RPM between 2 and 3 thousand RPM a sound started to emit from the engine I had never heard before. It was a fast nocking sound. I asked him what it was and he shut off the car and started it again and reved it up to 2000 then 3000 and so on the sound started at 2000 and stopped after 3000 rpm. He told me it wasnt a good sound. ( I could have told him that) . I have stopped driving it because of this sound.
anyone have any ideas what it could be? the part that puzzles me is that it only makes the sound between 2000 and 3000 rpm.

where is the knock comming from? pop the hood and listen if its comming from the block you prolly spun a bearing and if you keep driving it its going to throw a rod through the block, i did that 2 years ago it really sucked... if its comming from the head, pull the valve cover and see if anything is loose there. good luck and i hope for your sake its nothing serrious.
So I went by a bmw specialist where I live and he told me that a bearing is going bad and it is going to throw a rod if I keep driving it... :banghead issed2 so im now im looking around for a different engine (one that isnt going to throw a rod)
got any suggestions? I have a E30 325i Cabrio Keep in mind im a student on a budget

well if you have the tools, pull the engine and rebuild it yourself where do you live? and check the scrap yards they usualy have complete used drop in engines for 1000 can. so that woul dbe like 6-700 us?
My ATF pump in the tranny made the sound of a spun bearing right before it let go. It also was speed dependent. Sometimes it made no noise at all, but rev it up a little and the sound was there. The sound didnt sound anything like a transmission. In fact it sounded so much like it was in the engine I was pulling the valve cover trying to track it down.
