Engine revs 3 times on start up

E30 1989 model 325E;
After kangaroo hopping into a service station several months ago, the mechanic replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs and ended up doing a full service. I was told there was a lot of water in the fuel that caused the problem.
Since then the car runs well ecept when I start it up it revs 3 times and then idles, and it does it when it is cold. Has anyone had experienced this and could sugest the cause? The mechanic had no idea.

Sounds like the MAF/MAS, which is located between the throttle body and air box,it can be unplugged and cleaned with Meths and give the throttle body a clean while your there, if this doesnt help, a new MAF/MAS, Thats what I would go for 1st.

3 revs on cold start

Many thanks Marti for that, please excuse my ignorance what is the MAF/MAS (air flow something?) I will have time during the Christmas vacation to give this a go. I'm guessing the MAF/MAS is located near the firewall under the bonnet?

silversled can only hope to improve
actually, only 3 revs in cold for a stone cold engine on a 2.5L is good....especially if it is moist or wet out...3 is good I think...
