e30 paint suggestions

86 325e, its a burgundy color. some spots on the hood and rooof have almost turned into dust. it can be removed with wipe of my finger. i want to paint it black or gray/silver. can i get some assitance on how i should aproach this. im not lookin to drop a huge bill. is it possible for me to do some prep work myself, what is it that i can do(sanding and how?) and types of paint.

Delphin metallic, very cool stock color. One suggestion, professional application, it will save you a massive headache.

If you've never done any prep work or painted a car before and you don't want to drop a huge bill, you're better off just going to Maaco or something and letting them do it. My dad owns a body shop and a good paint job costs runs anywhere from 3 to 4 thousand, depending on how much body work the car needs. Maaco could hook you up for a fraction of that, but remember, you get what you pay for.

only the hood, roof, and trunk need to be sanded and what not. all the fenders are nice and shiny. don't understand.
