E30 M50 Exhaust fun

So i've got an e30 swapped m50. Going to the smog ref on tuesday and had a few questions about exhaust options. Eventually i'll be dropping in a s50 clone but currently just an m50 with m3 headers. Now when i dropped the car off at the exhaust shop i asked for true duals all the way back with 2 cats. When i pick up the car they put 2 1/2 inch duals all the way back with a x pipe b4 the cats and the o2 sensor in the cross pipe. Loud as all hell crazy amount of resonance. No low end power and sounds like a rice rocket above 3k rpms. WTF. So back to the drawing board and i need a somewhat quiet setup that doesn't kill the HP too much any suggestions?

Passed the ref check with flying colors. Remember in cali u have to have 2a cars as well as a y pipe to single exhaust out the back. Woohoo

Yeah Cali emission standards are much stricter than anywhere else in the US. 2 cats is mandatory
