Anybody out here with information, personal experience, or knowledge of other websites, pertaining to placing an M5 (either an E39 or E34) engine into an E30 BMW. Specifically a 1989 (or newer) 325is.
I am looking for info on cost, parts, reliability, suspension upgrades, and brake upgrades.
Could the engine/drive train be changed and the appropriate suspension/brake upgrades done for $10k or less? Parts and labor included?
How reliable are these once the conversion has been done?
How close to stock could the car appear?
What exactly are the suspension and braking upgrades?
Anyone have any performance specs?
What are the chances of locating such an engine with relatively low miles?
it would prob cost more than 10k, it would prob be worth it, heres a site that does various bmw engine conversionsschneller, heres a site that sells rebuilt bmw engines engines, if the motor fits into the chassis, the car should look the same, however, the only problem i could think of is that, if the m5 engine is a v8, it would be quite heavy, and could screw up the balance of the car, b/c the e30 prob wasn't made to such specs, whatever go for it, thatd be nice as hell, the reason i say the m5 is v8 is that the e34 530 is 214hp v8, so i would expect a good amount more from m5
E39 M5 engine/transmission will run you close to 15,000 in parts alone. but 400 hp is quite a jump. 5 liter V8 with 6-speed manual tranny. The E34 M5 has a 6cyl engine with 340 HP mated with a 5 speed. there is one for sale on EBAY for 1500 right now. you will have to find the transmission elsewhere though

the S38 swap (e34 m5) has been done a few times, and is alot more realistic than a S62 swap, though you could squeeze either one in. but it makes much more sense to go with a S50 (from a e36 M3) due to costs.
