3-Series (E21, E30)Chat relating to the BMW 3-Series from 1975-1983 and 1984-1991 line. Specific models: BMW 315, BMW 316, BMW 318, BMW 318i, BMW 320/4, BMW 320i, BMW 320/6, BMW 323i, BMW 320i. E30 Family models include: BMW 325e, BMW 325i, BMW 325is, BMW 325ix.
My 87 325is needs a new gas tank, the stock tank is 14 gallons, the 88 and newer e30's
use a 16 gallon tank. I would prefer the larger tank and im just wondering if this swap can be done.
I dont know about the swap, but my 88 has a 14 gallon tank. So, maybe the changeover was a mid year change, if so be careful about an 88 as a donor for the bigger tank.

take some measurments once you pull out the other one if the bolting paterns are the same or you can make them the same but the other one just hangs a bit lower then your fine, but it might be wider in which case it probably wont fit into the spot, so take measurments and then find one and measure it and if you'v got a little room to play with then go for it.

i have a brand new aftermarket tank that i will be pulling off in the next few weeks. it has about 300 miles on it so far. i'm switching over to a fuel cell. my car was made in 09/87, so if the tank will fit. i'm willing to get rid of both senders and the pump assembly with it. the pump is on its way out though.
the later model tank is way different, the ventilation is different and it has in-tank pumps instead of an external pump. You can make it work but you would have to have a whole later model car with all of the parts in it
