Hey what's up i just bought and old 87' 325 or also know as the E30, i was wondering, i live in Minnesota and when it gets cold out it will nt start. but here is the weired thing, when i pull it into my shop for like 5-10 mintues it starts. It olny doesn't start when it is cold, can someone please help me with this problem. Thanks
Since you live in Minnesota, I'll assume that it gets way colder than I'll ever know about here in Georgia. I'll make some general assumptions...
Try a thinner oil for the winter time. Your oil might be too thick and sludge-like in the morning for the engine to even cooperate. Also, even though it couldn't be temp-related, check the starter motor. Who knows what lurks there. It might be the problem.
But I do have one question. If it is not starting, does that mean you are pushing it into the shop?
Does it start if you boost it? Also, when you try to start it do you hear the starter clicking? I have cold weather starting probelms too... I am also using a really thick oil too... but it I doubt it's the problem though. Reaad my postabout starter probelms too... Maybe we can help eachother out.
Yeah, hey thanks man, yeah it gets colder than a mother fucker here! Well, i just thought you 2 should know since you replyed that i am throwing in a turbo in this bitch to make faster. What kinda ol do you think i should use? what weight? and does that really make the difference. the starter is fine, when you start it, it clicks over. To tell you the truth when i get done working and it doesn't start, as soon as i pull the car in the garage that is warm for like not even more than like 5 mins. the fucker starts! i don't get it help me figure it out PLEASE!!!
as far as the oil goes, if you flip to the index in your owners manual and look for oil, go to some of the pages and it will give you a tempurature reference graph for different weights of oil.
I use synth 15W-50. It has a really broad range of tempurate response.
check your thermo-time switch and your cold start injector

Drag racing an m3 is like going fishing with a hooker, it's fun but it's not what you got her for.
There's no replacement for displacement.
I need to know!
