is there a way to change the flex disc without dropping the exhaust?

Not really. I had to drop the back end of my exhaust so I could lower the center Cat section enough to get the plate off that covers the drive shaft itself off. You also have to remove the center shaft holder (can't remember the name) so the drive shaft can have leeway and you can remove it from the flex disc. It takes a bit of time to do so have some patience.
