E30 318 non-starter.. help!!

Hi there, was wondering if anyone could help me..

My friend has a '90 318 E30 which he has recently acquired. Problem is that the car has been sitting in its current spot for a while.. possibly a year as a result of something to do with the fuel pump. From what I know, either the fuel pump needs replacing or there is no power to it.. sorry for being so vague but my friend isnt really being helpful about this. Regardless, it didn't start before but at least the starter motor kicked in when the key was turned. However, now it doesn't start at all which I can only assume is due to a dead battery. I turn the key and nothing happens!

My question is this.. where do I start to even try and fix this? new battery? and how would i determine the exact fault to do with the fuel pump....? I'd hate to have to replace the fuel pump only to realise that its got nothing to do with it..

first thing is to replace the battery. As long as it has been sitting, even if you charged it, the charge wouldn't last very long. With a fresh battery, you could then test the FP. First thing would be to check the fuse. After that, check to make sure its getting power. After that, check the fuel filter. If the engine isn;t getting fuel and the pump appears to be fine, the filter could be clogged.
