E30??

To all of you on this forum the following question may seem utterly stupid, but I say again that I'm kinda new to the BMW world and learning so don't hound on me too hard. I've tried searching around but I couldn't find the answer to why you guys call the 3 series e30s . If anyone could give me a least of definitions for e30s and other models that'd be awesome.

that's the official model # of the car/series ie a 92-98 3 series is referred to e36 and 99-2004(5?) is referred to e46

Thats just how BMW keeps track of the body types they have come up with, basically the "e30" was the 30th body type that they came out with, like the new 7 is an e65, i can list all of the common us models and what years they are if you want

if you go to bmwworld.com and scroll down a bit, you can see all the E models all the way from E3 to E90, with my favorite being the E30, E31, and E34.

E36 is 92-99
E46 is 00-05
